What is Coaching?

When I first got into life coaching I thought the term “coach” in life coaching was a bit of a misnomer. When I think of a coach I think of someone that tells me what I am doing wrong and helps me do things right instead, I think of someone who is in charge of me. I think about people like Phil Jackson, someone who was somehow able to control people like Dennis Rodman and Michael Jordan and tell them what to do, and they listened! If you watched the recent documentary “The Last Dance” about the 1998 Chicago Bulls it might be surprising to you just how coachable those players were. Can you imagine someone like MJ actually needing someone to tell him how to play basketball the right way and him being humble enough to listen?

However, perhaps my initial thoughts about coaching were not entirely accurate. A closer look at successful sports coaches shows that they are good at helping their athletes be the best versions of themselves. This is what life coaching is all about. In life coaching the client is the boss. You set the goals, you set the mission, and you find the answers (to be theologically healthy and accurate here, I mean the goals, missions and answers you think God is moving you and your ministry towards!) My job as a coach is to help you achieve those goals by helping you be the best version of you that God has equipped you to be in the ministry that God has called you to.

Life coaching is for people that have goals they want to accomplish and need a bit of help with getting them done. Maybe you need someone to brainstorm with. Maybe you need someone to bounce your ideas off of and make sure they are theologically and biblical sound. Perhaps someone to help you organize all of your thoughts. Maybe you are the type of person that needs someone (me) to give you a deadline to get things done.

As a Life Coach I may sometimes challenge your thinking if you seem to be contradicting yourself, as any good friend or partner would do. If I get the sense that you are are unaware of certain aspects of a topic I may offer a different perspective, but in general I will be encouraging you to seek the answers that are correct for you in your own life with God and your ministry.
